MUMM - CUVEE R.LALOU 1998 - CHAMPAGNE - FRANCE
Appellation: Champagne
Origin: France - Champagne - Reims
Grapes: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
A worthy successor to the first version, Cuvée R. Lalou completes the work of a creator of terroir, that of Rene Lalou, emblematic of the House. It is based on a bold approach: a selection parcel in the heart of the vineyard GH MUMM among 12 legendary "lieux-dits" of the Champagne, all located in Grands Crus, and all pressed and vinified separately. The power responds by elegance, the extent to finesse.
A wine for lovers of Wines rare!
If this blend holds true to the spirit of Lalou, it's because the House has never made a Cuvée that captures so completely the heart and essence of an entire terroir, of its own history and indeed of one man.
In exceptionnally good years when maturity and acidity perfection, Didier Mariotti, the House's current Chef de Cave, then proceeds to choose from among the finest of the twelve vineyards, keeping just a part, the quintessence of excellence for the final blend.
Blending plays upon the character of each wine - even the most distinctive will vary from one year to the next. The goal is to create a blend that's powerful, generous and complex, offset all the while by a touch of freshness.
The process continues much as it does for all great wines:
- Ageing prior to disgorgement lasts for arount 7 to 10 years, a further measure to ensure the quality of such characterful wines.
- Lastly, the dosage is light, at around 6 grams, allowing the blend's complexity to shine through in all its glory. |
Who is R.LALOU ?
Born in Paris in 1877, René Lalou headed the House of G.H. Mumm for nearly half a century. A Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur and holding senior rank in a dozen other orders of merit both French and international, René Lalou was also an art lover and collector as shown by his friendship with the Japanese painter Foujita. But above all, he was a man of true vision for the House of G.H. Mumm. It was under his leadership that Mumm champagne rediscovered its export prowess and the excellence of its vineyards.
MUMM...Since 1827 - Reims
For nearly two centuries, the House of G.H. Mumm has been shaped by the strongly held values that still form an integral part of its identity today. The history of the House reads like an adventure driven by the passion and courage of its founders.
Exploring and travelling the world over in pursuit of excellence, they shared a passion for discovery and experiencing the extraordinary that thrived on their innate daring and panache. This spirit lives on today in their successors.
