Grape variety : Chardonnay
The gentle south east facing slopes to the north and west of the important town of Mâcon are ideal for the Chardonnay grape, where a warm climate and limestone soil combine to produce lemony, delicately flavoured white wines. The villages of Viré and Clessé gained their own appellation in 1999, proof they are a distinct step up in quality from generic Mâcon Villages.
